Success for summer holiday sessions

Weekly football sessions in Dronfield may be extended for the autumn after they proved to be popular with youngsters.

Officers from the Dronfield Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team set up the sessions during the summer holidays to offer youngsters something to take part in and help reduce reports of anti-social behaviour.

Around 20 youngsters came along to the sessions, which took place every Friday afternoon at Gosforth Fields.

PC Mick Waller, Safer Neighbourhood Youth Officer for the area said: “The project was initially set up in response to community concerns about youngsters gathering in the area and causing a nuisance. Officers spoke to some of the groups while on patrol and many of the youngsters said they wanted to play football.

“The activity proved to be popular with local young people and we found that while the sessions were on we received no calls about nuisance youths in Dronfield.

“Officers have also been able to forge good relationships with the youngsters, who we hope will feel they can now speak in confidence with police about any issues which concern them.”

During August 2012 police received a total of 43 reports of anti-social behaviour in Dronfield, a 30 per cent reduction on the number of calls they received in August 2011, which was 62.

PC Waller added: “Due to the success of the project we are now working with Gosforth Fields to consider providing further football sessions at the centre on Friday evenings

“I would like to thank the youngsters for their hard work, participation and behaviour during the summer sessions. We would also like to express our thanks to Gosforth Fields Sports Association for their support and for allowing us to use their facilities.”
