Strolling out in memory of Katie

A LEABROOKS mum who lost her teenage daughter to skin cancer a year ago is holding a charity walk to raise awareness of the diesase.

Katie Taylor, of Albert Street, died on June 17 last year, aged 15. Her mum Alison, dad Wayne and brother Chris, are urging people to take part in a midnight walk for the second year in a row to raise money for research into malignant melanoma.

Alison, said: “I was in two minds as to whether to do it again as it will be just three days after the anniversary of Katie’s death, so will be hard to deal with but I have had so many people say that we need to do it again because we raised a lot of money last time — we’ve already had over 1,000 in donations for this one.”

Money raised from the five mile walk on June 20 will go towards research at Nottingham University Hospital where Katie was treated.

Her consultant there was Professor Poulam Patel who is highly regarded in melanoma research circles and the money will go to a fund that related to the work he does.

Alison described the year since Katie’s death as ‘horrendous’. She said: “I would desperately love to have my daughter back. It’s in my nature to try and look for the best in a situation, everything happens for a reason, yet at the time I could never see why it was happening — why did we have to lose her?”

Since Katie’s death the family have raised awareness all over the world with people contacting them from as far away as New Zealand.

So far a total of just under 14,000 has been raised for skin cancer charities with last year’s walk raising 8,075.

Katie’s Midnight Walk will start from St Thomas’ Centre on Nottingham Road in Somercotes at midnight, with a stop at the Old English Gentleman pub on Somercotes Hill.
