Spy camera bid to beat yobs

A village plagued by anti-social behaviour has installed security cameras on its streets to stop vandals in their tracks.

The 60,000 CCTV scheme is being introduced in Grassmoor following an escalation in anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

The problem became so bad that a Dispersal Order to move on potential offenders was operational in the village between April and October last year and residents demonstrated overwhelming support for CCTV in a parish council survey.

The scheme has been paid for by Grassmoor, Hasland and Winsick Parish Council with contributions from Derbyshire Community Safety Partnership, NE Derbyshire District Council and Surestart as well as community groups and organisations in Grassmoor.

Cllr Betty Hill, chairman of the parish council, said: "Prior to the introduction of the Dispersal Order last April, anti-social behaviour and vandalism in Grassmoor had reached unacceptable levels, to the extent that the lives of some local residents were being made a misery.

"The parish council was determined that action needed to be taken to prevent the problems recurring after the order ran out. The whole process, from the introduction of the Dispersal Order to the installation of the cameras, has been an excellent example of how effective partnership working can be in tackling such problems."

The scheme, which is currently being registered and will be up and running in the near future, will cover North Wingfield Road between the junctions of New Street and Birkin Lane, Mill Lane, the community centre and the primary school.

A portable camera has also been bought which can be located at other anti-social behaviour or vandalism hotspots.

Street lighting on parts of North Wingfield Road will also be enhanced as part of the scheme and new lighting is to be introduced on Mill Lane.
