Speed limits to be extended?

Plans to extend a 30mph speed limit on a popular route between Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whitehough have been welcomed.

The current 30mph limit on Crossings Road will extend past its junction with Charley Lane under proposals put forward by Derbyshire County Council (DCC).

Local resident John Lomas called on members of Chapel Parish Council to back the plans and suggested that further measures could be put in place.

He said: “That junction is a very dangerous junction, it is narrow, all the approaches are narrow and it is quite blind from both sides as you come down to it the road descends to it from both sides.

“If you don’t know it is there you could be caught out. Traffic can get stranded turning into Charley Lane.”

He said the road was very well used by walkers but that there were no verges or footpaths. “The fact they are extending the speed limit seems a golden opportunity to make it even safer and take it further still.”

Mr Lomas suggested speed humps should also be looked into.

Members of the council gave their backing to the extension of the speed limit, but not the speed humps which divided opinion.

Cllr Peter Harrison said: “It is not only a dangerous junction but water collects there and freezes.”

Cllr Stewart Young said he had brought the issue up with the local Safer Neighbourhood Team and the police were in favour of the speed limit being extended.

Cllr Mike Harrison said the route was a popular rat run and agreed with the speed limit extension. “I am not personally in favour of speed humps.”

The council is to write to DCC Highways in support of the speed limit being extended.
