Serial shoplifter locked up for six weeks

A serial thief has been locked up again by Chesterfield magistrates for two more offences of shoplifting.

Police were dealing with an unrelated matter in Kirkstone Road, Newbold, when they spoke to Mark Reynolds.

"He sat in a police vehicle and, protruding from a bag he had with him, was a bottle of whisky still bearing a security tag," said Becky Mahon, prosecuting.

Reynolds (34) of Compton Street, Chesterfield, admitted theft of whisky from Marks&Spencer as well as chicken drumsticks from a shop on April 23.

The court heard he had 88 previous convictions for theft and a suspended jail sentence imposed in January for dishonesty was later activated, following another theft. The bench locked him up six weeks.

"He was released from custody with no money and he couldn't claim benefit for the first 18 days," said Denney Lau. He said Reynolds had not eaten for two days and stole the whisky to sell and buy food.
