Road-humps petition

A campaigner driven round the bend by speed humps has collected a 9,000-signature petition demanding their removal across Chesterfield.

A campaigner driven round the bend by speed humps has collected a 9,000-signature petition demanding their removal across Chesterfield.

Home help Hazel Kincey decided to launch her latest campaign after being inundated with complaints from clients and fellow residents.

The protesters – accounting for a tenth of the borough's total population – claim the traffic-calming measures cause problems for emergency vehicles and mobility scooters, damage cars and create added pain for people with existing medical conditions, such as back problems.

Hazel (60), who also campaigned for the installaion of traffic lights on Chesterfield's Tesco roundabout, said: "We've gone mad with these road humps.

"They don't slow traffic down. I've sat in my room and watched motorbikes do wheelies over them, drivers in older cars who are not bothered about them speed over them and children on skateboards using them as ramps."

Hazel, of Manor Road, Brimington Common, is demanding all humps – except those outside schools – are removed. She said: "I want to try and get them up."

Hazel believes speed cameras should be installed which she claims do slow down motorists.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire County Council, said: "We welcome any comments made by residents and look forward to receiving this petition which will be handed on to Brian Lucas, cabinet member for sustainable communities."
