Puppy needs a home

Derek the puppy was dumped in Shirebrook.

Derek the puppy was dumped in Shirebrook.

A puppy with a deformed leg that was found dumped in a recreational area in Shirebrook.

The puppy was found at lunch time on Saturday, June 23 on the grounds near to Recreation Drive.

A concerned member of the public took the pup home and then contacted the RSPCA and an inspector collected the dog and took him to see a vet.

Vets confirmed that the dog had a deformed front left leg, which he had probably been born with.

He was then taken to the RSPCA Chesterfield and North Derbyshire Branch where he is currently being cared for and has since been named Derek.

Derek was found in an immaculate condition, but it is thought that he had been dumped rather than lost, because of his age and his deformity.

However he has since settled in very well at the Chesterfield Animal Centre and staff say that he getting around very well on his three healthy legs and is behaving just like a normal healthy puppy.

Vets have said they will look at Derek’s leg again in a few weeks time, but the likely outcome is that it will have to be amputated in the future. Staff will continue to monitor it in the meantime.

Derek is around nine weeks old and is believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier cross.

The RSPCA is keen to hear from anyone who may have any information as to who Derek’s owner is and anyone with information is urged to call 0300 123 8018.
