Postmaster raps police

AN ANGRY postmaster has hit out at police who left his Post Office "vulnerable" to thieves after a car crashed into the shop front.

A Nissan Micra smashed into the unit on Market Place, Wirksworth, around 6.30pm on Thursday and police had two shattered windows boarded up, but postmaster David Peters said the door, which had been pushed ajar at the bottom, was left unsecured.

He was not told about the incident at the time, and said his wife Mary was panic-stricken when she arrived the next morning – thinking the place had been raided until a note from the police was found.

Mr Peters said: "The door was hanging on one lock. It wouldn't have taken much to break open. The Post Office was vulnerable overnight because the police were unable to do their job properly.

"This could have been sorted the night before if the police had let us know. They could have made some effort to get in touch with us that evening."

Customers had to be turned away first thing Friday morning while a joiner was called to fix the door. The Post Office has since been open for business as normal.

Mr Peters said he intended to write a letter of complaint to the police about the way the matter had been handled.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Constabulary said: "We are aware of his concerns and have discussed the matter with him. We have explained why he was not contacted initially.

"We have apologised but if he does want to make a formal complaint it will be thoroughly investigated."

The female motorist who crashed the car into the Post Office was not injured. Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the collision.

Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire Police on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
