Plans for coke site unveiled
A consultation has been launched into the future of what is thought to be one of Europe’s most polluted sites.
The former Avenue Coking Works, in Wingerworth, is currently the centre of a massive clean-up operation to bring the once heavily contaminated land back into use for future generations, and is due to be completed by 2015.
NE Derbyshire District Council is now consulting on future proposals to develop the site.
It is hoped the area will be transformed with new homes, jobs and leisure facilities. New travel routes for buses, cycles and a footpath network are also in the pipeline.
Cllr Harold Laws, member for planning, said: “The Avenue is a key site to the future development of our district, presenting an opportunity to provide new homes, employment, leisure facilities and areas of green space which will serve the population for years to come.
“As the planning authority it’s crucial that we make the most of this site by making sure future developments are carried out in a planned and coherent way, and this framework is designed to help us achieve that.”
The consulation runs until September 17 with drop-in sessions at Grassmoor Community Centre on August 20 from 3pm to 7pm, Tupton Village Hall on August 28 from 3pm to 7pm and Wingersworth Parish Hall on September 6 from 4pm to 7pm.
Feedback will available in the autumn. Have your say in next week’s letters section.
