Singers and musicians from Derbyshire are in the running for top awards at a ceremony which will be broadcast live to the nation tonight, Wednesday, February 8.

Nominated for two gongs in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards are Home Service, led by Nether Heage’s lead vocalist and guitarist John Tams (recipient of five awards at previous ceremonies), who are in the running for best live act and best group.

Also in the running for two awards are Lucy Ward, from Derby whose song Maids When You’re Young is competing for best traditional track and who is also nominated for the Horizon Award alongside Lady Maisery, featuring former Chesterfield singer and accordion player Hannah James.

Bella Hardy, from Edale, is bidding for honours in the best original song category with her composition The Herring Girl.

Blair Dunlop, son of Fairport Convention founder Ashley Hutchings and Chesterfield singer Judy Dunlop, is among the nominees for the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award.

The awards ceremony will be presented by Mike Harding and Julie Fowlis at the Lowry Theatre, Salford.

Listeners can find out who the winners are on Radio 2 from 7.30pm to 10pm tonight.
