THE Gospel Mission Congregational Church will once again be organising Pancake Races on Old Road to mark Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) and the beginning of Lent the following day.

The idea goes back hundreds of years and many people still give things up for Lent today.

In the past Shrove Tuesday was seen as the last chance to indulge and to use up the foods that weren’t allowed in Lent. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs which were forbidden during Lent.

The Gospel Mission races will include teams representing groups from the church, the local neighbours, the Scouts and the Sunday School. Race organiser and church secretary, Chris Townsend, said: “No skill or previous experience is needed – just a sense of humour and a frying pan!”

The races, which have been a local tradition for over twenty years, are followed by fresh pancakes in the church and a Shrovetide Quiz for all the family.

Anyone intending to race should turn up at The Mission yard at 6.45pm and the races begin at 7.00pm. Spectators are welcome.
