The major regeneration of Chesterfield canal is set to move on to the next phase as new plans for Staveley town basin are revealed.

Volunteers have launched a fundraising drive to connect the bridge over the tail of the lock and construct the first building.

The marina officially opened in June after more than a year in construction.

The new mooring basin and 550 metres of reopened canal can house up to 20 large canal boats and 12 smaller crafts.

Chesterfield Canal Trust now need to raise £20,500 to release a £200,000 grant to help fund the latest project.

Rod Auton, of the trust, said: “We need help to bring Staveley Town Basin alive.

“Work costs an awful lot and this is just the first stage.”

He added: “Once the bridge is connected, it will bring the site together more and make access simpler, there will be no need to go round the dip.”

The trust has already raised £17,000 but need to raise a further £3,500 by November or the whole grant will be lost.

The project will also see toilets, an office and a small bunkhouse for volunteers created.

Future proposals include a sports pavilion, based on the old Tapton Lock House and the area around the basin developed with small business start-up units and cottages to rent.

Rod said: “We hope by the time we have the canal festival next June that the bridge will be in place.

“Everyone is so supportive of the project and when it’s all done it will look really good. We are now appealing for donations to reach our target.”
