NEW HOUGHTON: Plans for 35 new council homes

BOLSOVER District Council has taken the first steps into building thirty-five brand new Council properties in New Houghton.

At a special council meeting, it was unanimously agreed to enter into negotiations with a developer, to look into accessing funding that is available from the Homes and Communities Agency to provide affordable housing for new and existing tenants.

The proposed development would see 48 old, pre-fabricated tarran bungalows on Moorgate Avenue, Meden Avenue, Appleby Road and Occupation Road replaced with 94 properties, of which the council will purchase 20 two-bedroom bungalows, 11 two-bedroom houses and 4 three-bedroom houses and the rest are expected to be social housing properties.

Bolsover District Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing Management, Cllr Keith Bowman said: “This decision confirms our ambition to provide good quality, affordable housing.

“We have been working very hard to get these properties replaced for some time now and at long last we can see some light at the end of the tunnel and help provide our tenants with a much more comfortable home.”

Eighteen of the tarran bungalows are still occupied and the proposed development will be undertaken in three phases so many of these tenants could move into their new homes straight from their current property to reduce any disruption. Those required to move in the first phase will move into a decant property and then into their new bungalow.

If agreed, the new, modern, energy efficient properties will be much more energy efficient than the current properties, helping tenants vastly reduce their heating and energy bills.

Cllr Bowman added, “We have looked at what properties are required in the area and developed a scheme around this so it will not only help meet the villages local housing need but meet the wider housing need for good social rented accommodation.”

The bungalows would be restricted to elderly tenants and if the development gets the go-ahead it is likely to start in spring 2013 with a completion date of March 2014.
