Mums-to-be paid to quit - EXCLUSIVE

PREGNANT women who smoke will be paid to quit the habit in a controversial NHS scheme being piloted across NE Derbyshire.

Expectant mothers who give up smoking during pregnancy and for six months afterwards will be handed up to just over £750 in the scheme which could be rolled out across the whole of the county.

Health chiefs said the initiative has been launched amid concerns about the devastating effects of smoking on unborn babies – but taxpayers have hit out at the radical move.

Like everyone else I am concerned about how my taxes are spent. However, I have to give my support to this scheme. Stopping smoking is never easy - believe me I know from experience! Stopping smoking when you are pregnant is extremely hard and even though a mum to be knows she should give up for the sake of her baby, actually doing it is a different matter. There is no doubt about it - smoking harms the unborn baby as does the expectant mum being exposed to other people's smoke. Women who smoke during pregnancy risk having a low birth weight baby, have an increased chance of miscarriage, or of having a baby with birth defects and have an increased risk of cot death. Stopping smoking is the single best thing a woman can do to protect the health of her baby. Surely £750 is a small price to pay to help a woman stop smoking for the sake of her baby. An unhealthy mother and baby cost the NHS and the tax payer a lot more the n £750!!

This is perfect!!! What a great way of handing out MORE money to 'certain' people in society who are unable to stand on their own two feet, get jobs, use contraception and take responsibility for their own actions! Talk about making the tax payer look a mug, this is where our taxes are going!!?? Seriously, women who are more likely to quit the fags for money rather than their baby, well in my eyes don't deserve a baby. But eh, lets keep feeding these people money and benefits. Rant over, im off to work............. people on benefits and smoking schemes depend on me!

This is utterly ridiculous if a pregnant lady cannot give up smoking based purely on the evidence given by doctors then why should my taxes be used to incentivise them giving up. This will also encourage people to get pregnant further in order to gain £750 aswell as alot more that comes with pregnancy as some people appear to be turning this into a career anyway.
