Mr and Mrs E. Moore, Shirland
A former soldier has told how he met his wife-to-be while on leave. But he made sure it was not a case of farewell-to-arms because they were soon reunited and went on to celebrate 60 years of marriage.
Eric (81) and Enid Moore (80), of School Close, Shirland, enjoyed a brief encounter at a party when Eric was on leave from the Royal Army Medical Corps and they were later married at Chesterfield Register Office.
Mr Moore said: "We met while I was on leave just after the Second World War but we kept in touch and started courting and were later married on St George's Day."
Mrs Moore worked at a textile factory and a grocery store and Mr Moore was a colliery worker before he became an English teacher and worked at South Normanton's Frederick Gent School.
The couple, who have a daughter Carol, enjoyed a celebratory meal with family to mark their diamond wedding anniversary and were showered with flowers and cards, including one from the Queen.
Mr Moore added: "The card from Queen is taking prominence among the others and all the flowers we received have really brightened up our home."
