Motorist hurt in bus smash

A TEENAGE motorist is in hospital with serious head and leg injuries after he was involved in a head-on-collision with an on-coming bus.

The 19-year-old, from Chesterfield, was driving along the B6048 road, at Pilsley, near Bakewell, about 2.45pm, on Tuesday, when his blue Citroen Saxo crashed with a Hulley's passenger bus.

The injured youngster had to be air-lifted to hospital.

A Derbyshire Constabulary police spokesman said: "The car driver lost control while travelling from Bakewell to Pilsley and was in collision with the single-decker bus driving in the opposite direction.

"He suffered head and leg injuries and was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital by air-ambulance where he remains in a serious condition."

Matlock, Hathersage and Buxton firefighters were called out to the scene and crews freed the car driver and a female bus passenger who were both trapped in the wreckage.

Seven people on the bus, including the bus driver, also needed hospital treatment and firefighters helped give medical assistance and trauma care.

The crash happened outside The Farm Shop and the road was closed for several hours while casualties were treated and police launched an investigation. Traffic, including parents of children, at Pilsley School had to be diverted.

Any witnesses should call Pc 2858 Gary Wilson at Derbyshire Constabulary's collision unit on (01773) 572929 or 0345 123 3333.
