COUNCIL chiefs have given their approval for a Morrisons supermarket and petrol station to be built in Bolsover town centre.

Bolsover District Council has voted in favour - by a majority - for Morrisons’ proposed development to be built on the authority’s HQ site at Sherwood Lodge, off Oxcroft Lane, as the council aims to move to the Clowne college campus site.

The council’s planning committee had already approved Morrisons’ application and every councillor, except District Cllr Duncan Kerr, voted in favour of the development during a full council meeting, yesterday, November 28.

Separate recommended plans for a council contact centre in the town will now be fully considered and are also expected to move forward. Save Sherwood Green campaigners are opposed to the development which they fear is too big, will result in a loss of green land, the loss of the old Sherwood Lodge building and will pose a threat to local businesses.

Residents have also raised concerns that the appearance of the contact centre will clash with surrounding buildings and mean a loss of car parking space.

Morrisons and the council have argued the Morrisons store and service station development will regenerate the area, keep shoppers in the town, create up to 250 jobs and will include landscaping with trees.

District Cllr Duncan Kerr, who is a Green Party member, voted against the development and argued that it posed a threat to open spaces, would mean the loss of a Victorian building and claimed the majority of new jobs would be part-time positions.

Protestors still intend to continue campaigning because a final decision is still subject to approval from the Secretary of State.
