Miracle recovery of coma man
A Chesterfield man has been hailed a walking miracle after surviving horrific road-accident injuries which left him in a coma for weeks.
Doctors feared that Andrew Wall would not last the night following a collision with a taxi on Cavendish Street, Chesterfield, and claimed that his brain damage was irreparable.
But Andrew (27) is now home again in Salisbury Avenue, Newbold — and this week he said: "It's great to be alive!"
Now Wendy and Andrew's stepfather David Heath are planning a 2,000-mile motor bike ride to Spain and back to raise cash for the brain injury charity Headway as a thank-you for Andrew's recovery.
Andrew's grim battle for life began following the late-night accident on Bonfire Night.
His family, who were soon at his bedside at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, were given the devastating news by doctors.
"We were told that under no circumstances would he survive his injuries," said mum Wendy, who lives at Broadmeadows, South Normanton.
"They told us that had no chance of survival whatsoever and we had already spoken with the transplant co-ordinators about donating his organs."
But then when a nurse was wiping his face, she saw Andrew attempt to suck on the sponge and noticed his eyelids flickering — and Andrew was rushed to the Hallamshire Hospital at Sheffield to have a blood clot removed from his brain.
Even then, surgeons still said that Andrew's injuries were so severe that he would not survive more than 48 hours.
"After about two weeks we were told that if he came out of his coma he wouldn't walk, talk or recognise anyone and he would be paralysed on his right hand side," said his mum.
"We were told that only a miracle could save him – this shows that miracles do happen.
