Marathon man to boost spinal research

Eric Keeler, of Wingerworth, is running the London Marathon for Spinal Research

Eric Keeler, of Wingerworth, is running the London Marathon for Spinal Research

A COOK is swapping the kitchen for the open road as he trains for the London Marathon.

Eric Keeler, 24, of Wingerworth, is taking part in the 25-mile challenge to boost charity Spinal Research.

He was inspired after a friend hurt her back while snowboarding in Austria.

Eric, who works at the Smithy Pond pub, said: “The doctors had to take two of her spinal discs out and fuse the vertebrae together.

“We thought it would be a major operation but it wasn’t. She is absolutely fine now.

“If it wasn’t for Spinal Research and the work they fund it could have been very complicated or even not possible.

“So when I saw that they were looking for people to run the marathon for them I thought “why not?’”
