Lilian's joy at royal meeting

An excited pensioner says she can hardly wait to meet the Queen, after being told she is to receive Maundy Money from Her Majesty.

Matlock woman Lilian Wright will accept the ceremonial silver money – which is part of a Royal tradition dating back to the 12th Century – at a high-profile event at Derby Cathedral on Maundy Thursday, which this year falls on April 1.

Lilian, from Crook Stile, has been nominated for the honour to reward her for the selfless volunteering she does at St Giles' Church in Matlock and as a Mothers' Union branch leader.

The 81-year-old said: "I am really looking forward to going to the cathedral and taking part in such a special event.

"I do a lot of things for the Mothers' Union and St Giles' Church, but I wouldn't call what I do work as I enjoy doing it so this came as a real surprise.

"It's very exciting and I think about it every night when I go to sleep – I'm mainly just wondering what to wear now," she added.
