COUNCIL chiefs have approved controversial plans to switch off thousands of Derbyshire street lights at night.

About 40,000 lights will be turned off between midnight and 5.30am after Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet passed the proposals on Tuesday.

The move, which will be rolled out over a three or four-year period, is expected to save about £550,000 a year in energy bills and cut carbon emissions.

The council said lights would not be switched off in a number of areas, including town centres.

Highways chief Cllr Simon Spencer said: “This is not about plunging Derbyshire into darkness – it’s a sensible approach to save both carbon and money.”

The council will carry out local risk assessments and residents will be able to comment on plans for their area before any changes go ahead.

Anne Western, Labour group leader at the council, said: “The test will be how it’s implemented. There’s no delivery plan in place – it’s cut first then cobble a plan together.”
