A campaign highlighting the devastating consequences of landmines across the world has come to Alfreton.

Soroptomists of Amber Valley compiled a pyramid of shoes at Severn Square to symbolise limbs lost to landmines on the 15th anniversary of the international ban on the weapon.

Joyce Handbury, from the group, said the display was one of many taking place in the country until December 10 to raise awareness of the ongoing battle against landmines.

She said: “Mines are still an issue today.

“Our own troops have been victims of landmines.”

Soroptomists of Amber Valley held the display as part of the Forgotten 10 Challenge, a UK-wide campaign coordinated by the charity Handicap International UK. All the shoes were donated and are to be given to the Red Cross.

The Soroptomists, which meet every second Monday of the month at Firs House, Alfreton, have been helping raise funds for victims of landmines since 1997. If you are interested in joining the group, call Joyce on 01773 754082.
