Lady of the lamp story

The story of pioneering nurse Florence Nightingale will be brought to life at Dales libraries to mark the centenary of her death.

Known as the Lady of the Lamp, Florence grew up in Lea and earned herself a place in history for her work nursing soldiers during the Crimean War.

Her life is now set to be celebrated through talks and exhibitions in Matlock library in May and June and in Wirksworth library in June.

Displays featuring photographs and items from the Sherwood Foresters' regimental museum will be on show.

Sherwood Foresters expert Clive Tougher is also giving free hour-long lectures as part of the commemoration at 7.30pm at Matlock Presentation Sisters Heritage Centre, off Chesterfield Road, on Thursday May 20 and Wirksworth Library, Town Hall on Thursday, June 17.
