KILLAMARSH: Youngsters have their spray on new pharmacy
Youngsters from Killamarsh Youth Centre have had their spray on a new pharmacy by creating artwork on the site’s billboards.
Community-minded GPs and the Patient Participation Group at Killamarsh Medical Practice were keen to help the Youth Centre and asked the youngsters to produce a work of community art which reflected life in Killamarsh on their new pharmacy site.
The Young People were supported by spray art tutor Casper Kennedy Carr from the My Life Project. Rykneld Homes funded the project and there was also support from Derbyshire Constabulary. The Practice will donate the billboards to the Youth Centre once building work has been completed on the site for the youngsters to enjoy.
Paul Roberts, Practice Manager of Killamarsh Medical Practice, said: “Our Practice is committed to the communities it serves, so we are delighted to support our local Youth Centre. The new pharmacy site offered the teenagers an ideal opportunity to express themselves and bring some colour and creativity to Killamarsh. They have worked hard to develop their artistic skills and the art on show is very impressive.”
Youth Worker Terence Williams said: “The young people have been excited about doing the project of spray art on the billboards. With the help of Casper, the young people have learned about health and safety, protective clothing, handling the spray cans and allowed to be creative.
“The project is a clear demonstration that young people can make a positive contribution to the community. The youngsters feel good about what they have achieved with the right support and guidance. There has been a very positive reaction from people in the community who have praised the work.”
The new Pharmacy will open in March and patients will benefit from a full range of pharmacy services as well as health and lifestyle advice. Services include pregnancy testing, screening services (diabetes and cholesterol), stop smoking services and travel advice.
Providing convenient access to prescriptions and other medicines, opening hours include late evenings and weekends. The new pharmacy will be an important addition in helping North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group to reduce mortality rates, health inequalities and teenage pregnancy rates within the Killamarsh area.
Killamarsh Medical Practice, which is a member of North Derbyshire Clinical Commissioning Group, serves the Killamarsh population and has 9,300 registered patients.
