Judges commend Bakewell town framework

A framework for the future of Bakewell town centre has been highly commended at a national awards ceremony.

‘A Public Realm Framework for Bakewell’ was produced by Maxim Urban Design and Evans Vettori architects to identify both basic and more radical improvements that could be made to the public areas of Bakewell.

The framework, funded by the Peak District National Park Authority was held in high regard by the Landscape Institute at its 2012 awards ceremony in London.

Sarah Foster, area planning manager for the authority, said: “The aim of the report is to ensure that the town’s streets and public spaces remain attractive and vibrant to residents and visitors, promoting the viability of local shops and services. The document was subtitled ‘The Gatherings’ because it identified the current lack of opportunities for people to stop and linger in public spaces in the town centre, and made proposals for more places to pause, rest, meet friends and take in the market town atmosphere.”

The Landscape Institute Awards judges said: “This is a well-presented and thorough appraisal of public realm function, purpose and practical use.”
