Stan, 53, of Wingerworth, was left severely brain damaged, unable to speak and confined to a wheelchair when a routine operation to treat arthritis went wrong.

To date doctors have been unable to say what happened during the hip resurfacing procedure in 2008 but he has not received any compensation as the surgeon followed correct procedure.

After Stan’s story appeared in the Derbyshire Times, neighbours and friends launched a campaign in November to raise £50,000 to pay for pioneering stem cell treatment which could see him speak again.

To Stan and wife Kay, who live on Chartwell Avenue with their three dogs, knowing that Stan may speak again would be the best Christmas present ever.

Kay, 52, said: “It’s such a tragic story. People are very surprised this could happen and have been willing to help.”

Stan, who can communicate through a computer, said: “It would totally change my life if it worked.”

Kay added: “The first words I want to hear are ‘I love you’.”

On January 17 a quiz will take place at the Woodside Inn, Chesterfield and on February 16 a ball and auction, with James Lewis, will take place at the Red Lion, Stanage, both to raise funds for Stan’s appeal.

Dave Stone Design, of Chesterfield, has also donated £300.

To buy tickets for the ball and auction priced at £37 call Kay on 07834601008.
