Healthy dose of humour from the former scientist

AWARD-WINNING comedian and former scientist Dave Spikey is set to inject the region with a healthy dose of humour.

The TV star and writer is delighted to be returning to one of his favourite parts of the country, where he has left audiences rolling with laughter and filmed the popular show Dead Man Weds.

His Best Medicine UK Tour – Repeat Prescription is on the road again after the success of his last run of gigs and it will be kicking-off shortly and rolling into Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel this month.

Dave (57) said: “I did Chesterfield a couple of years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m really looking forward to coming back because people in this region are so receptive and generous.”

Science’s loss has no doubt been comedy’s gain after the former chief bio-medical scientist hung up his rubber gloves on the basis that laughter is the best form of medicine.

He added: “When I was working at the Royal Bolton Hospital I got involved with an amateur-dramatics group and ended-up on the stage.

“During the next ten years I was doing gigs with the likes of Eddie Izzard, Jack Dee and Lee Evans and I cracked-on and ended up leaving the hospital.”

This versatile, seasoned pro says his greatest influence was his late father and Dave found as he grew-up he couldn’t stop putting humour into everything he did, including school essays.

He deservedly struck the big-time after meeting Peter Kay at a comedy awards ceremony and the duo wowed the nation with their hit Channel 4 TV show Phoenix Nights.

His show Dead Man Weds, with Johnny Vegas, was set around Castleton and gave viewers an hilarious take on provincial newspapers.

And fans tuned in by their thousands to see Dave as team captain in comedy TV quiz 8 Out of 10 Cats.

The passion for writing comedy has seen him commissioned by Bolton’s Octagon Theatre and he is working on two books based on the tour.

And as a wonderful observer of human nature, Chorley-based Dave is a keen animal campaigner and vegetarian.

But his passion for vegetarian food cost him his two front teeth and left him with a Hitler moustache-style scar days before an armed forces gig.

He added: “I was walking with a curry and slipped but was so concerned about losing the food I fell on my face and had to go to Germany for a British forces gig looking like Hitler.”

Mission

He’s now on a mission to improve the nations’s health with tales of stunned guinea pigs, wasp allergies, dancing for dobbers and many more.

Dave will be appearing at Chesterfield’s Winding Wheel, on Friday, February 27, and at the Mansfield Palace, on Friday, March 27.

His tour will be broken into two legs with gigs between February 26 and May 31 and the second leg from September to December.

Tickets cost 17.50. Those interested in the Chesterfield show can call (01246) 345222/345334 and anyone wishing to see the Mansfield performance can call (01623) 633133.
