Hathersage homes protected by SmartWater kits

Homeowners in two Hathersage streets have become the latest to safeguard their properties against crime by having high-tech SmartWater installed.

Police from Hathersage Safer Neighbourhood Team offered the kits to residents in Moorland Road and Sheffield Road, with several taking them up.

The kits will now be used to mark valuable items such as TVs, laptops and even cars with a UV fluid.

This fluid contains a unique code that can be identified under UV light and helps police reunite the owner with those items if they are stolen and recovered.

It can be used to link a criminal with a crime scene, as the unique codes transfer to skin and clothing as well.

Warning posters have also been put up in the area as a deterrent to would-be criminals.

PCSO Anthony Boswell, who led the drive, said: “SmartWater and other high-tech equipment like it is a fantastic way for people to protect themselves and their belonging from criminals.

“If they have something stolen, the UV fluid helps track it back to them, which can be of great reassurance.

“It is also a great deterrent to criminals. They know how these kits work and if they are made aware that items and homes are protected, they will think twice about targeting them.

“We want to help protect our communities and I’m pleased several residents took up this offer.”

SmartWater kits have been distributed to hundreds of homes across the Derbyshire Dales as part of the area’s Community Safety Partnership, which includes organisations such as the police and Derbyshire Dales District Council.

To report suspicious activity or if you have any information about crime call Derbyshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
