From drags to riches!

DASHING fellas in ladies' glad rags helped raise more than £12,000 during a charity drag race for seriously ill hospice patients.

Ashgate Hospice, of Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, hosted its second annual five-mile drag race round the town on Sunday and attracted 200 daring runners of all ages from 11 to 75.

Emily Evans, hospice fundraising manager, said: "It was a wonderful turn out and we were very impressed with the many exceptional and revealing outfits on display."

Toni Burton, of Chesterfield's Nuffield Health gym, warmed up runners and they were entertained by drag artist Lady Larue, the town's Direction Theatre performers and many road side supporters.

Runner Tim Clayton, of North Wingfield, was crowned overall winner and received an Inspire engraved trophy and second place went to last year's winner Daniel Teasel, of Dunston.

Mrs Evans added: "This is the second time we've held this event and we're so grateful for all the fellas and sponsors who truly got into the spirit of the day and helped us raise so much money towards the hospice's vital running costs.

"Runners raised over 12,000 in pledges but we expect there could still be further donations to come."

Ladies are still being invited to match the fellas during the hospice's sponsored Midnight Walk for women-only which sets out on Saturday evening, June 19, after organisers extended the deadline for entries.

Walkers or businesses wanting to join the 13 mile walk from Dronfield's Cliffe Park and back and those wishing to donate refreshments are urged to call the hospice on (01246) 567250 or visit www.ashgatehospice.org.
