Fighting the flood

editorial image

A group of Wirksworth residents had to battle the elements recently when floodwaters threatened houses at Millers Green.

Wirksworth Town Councillors Stephen Maskrey, Andy Pollock and Mike Ratcliffe joined residents early on Sunday, February 10, after melting snow and rain caused a sudden surge in ground water through the local pond system.

Resident Jim Rooney said: “The councillors were supposed to be looking at playing fields that morning, but when they heard about the problem they came straight down.

“We were calling them the Wirksworth Town Council emergency department.”

The team dug trenches and laid sandbags. Luckily, no property got flooded.
