Emergency crews rescue people from floods

POLICE and firefighters rescued 14 people after they were stranded during deep floods.

Torrential rain fell from about 3pm onwards on Wednesday creating flooding overnight, at Callywhite Lane, Dronfield, and Chesterfield Road, at Oakerthorpe, Alfreton, and left standing water in roads across Derbyshire.

Firefighters helped eleven trapped people to dry land from a cul-de-sac after Callywhite Lane was submerged in five feet of water and vehicles were submerged at Oakerthorpe where three people had to be helped to safety.

A Derbyshire fire service spokesman said: "Crews were called out to assist people in water rescues where levels posed a danger to residents and one vehicle at Callywhite Lane was partially submerged."

Chesterfield, Dronfield and Alfreton firefighters carried out rescues and the fire service received a high number of 999 calls from people in Dronfield and Alfreton facing flooding problems.

The extreme weather caused major disruption to businesses at Callywhite Lane industrial estate and one witness claimed water levels had at one point reached the roofs of vehicles.

Royal Mail postal deliveries to affected areas this morning have also been delayed and Dronfield train station was closed on the route between Chesterfield and Sheffield.

Flood warnings from the Environment Agency have remained in force for northern England including Derbyshire and Yorkshire after these two counties were the worst affected areas.

Homes and businsses in parts of Chesterfield were without power for parts of last night after lighning hit supplies during the storms.
