ECKINGTON: Cops’ warning over cash machine incidents

POLICE are advising people to be alert when using cash machines following two suspicious incidents in Eckington.

A 33-year-old man reported to police that his card had been retained by an ATM outside Lloyds TSB on Market Street, Eckington at around 7pm on Saturday, February 16. The man also contacted his bank and later found that cash had been taken from his account. A similar incident was also reported to the bank by another customer on the same day.

Sgt Tony Klenczar, of the Eckington Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We would like to make people aware of the incidents and ask that they are vigilant when using an ATM.

“The best thing to do if your card is swallowed by a cash machine is to contact your bank immediately and avoid leaving the machine until you have done this. You should also inform the police straight away if you notice anything suspicious.

“We would also appeal for anyone with information about these incidents to contact us.”

Other advice for when using cash points include:

Before using the machine, check to see if there is anything stuck to it or anything that looks unusual.

If it looks like it has been tampered with then do not use it and report it to the bank named on the ATM or police immediately.

Use your free hand to cover the PIN pad to prevent anyone seeing your PIN as you key it in.

If you are distracted by anyone when using a cash machine cancel the transaction and try to recover the card.

If the machine does not return your card, report it immediately to your card issuer. Stay at the machine if possible while you do this and contact the police straight away if you notice anything suspicious.

Check your bank statements to make sure money is not being taken from your account using a counterfeit card.

To report any suspicious activity, or information about these incidents contact Derbyshire police on 101. Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
