Drunk man head-butted wife
Law and order
A CHESTERFIELD man who head-butted his wife following a Boxing Day row is to get help with his drink problem.
Victim Tracey Pearson told police she and husband Matthew had been “getting on each other’s nerves” over the Christmas holiday.
They argued and she hit out at him and he then head-butted her, causing her nose to bleed, town magistrates heard.
“She said she felt partly to blame and didn’t want him to be prosecuted and the marriage would continue. They are living together,” said Sarah Haslam, prosecuting.
Pearson, 28, of Howden Close, Staveley, admitted the December 26 assault. He had a similar previous conviction.
The justices gave him a one-year probation supervision order, including a six-month alcohol treatment programme, with £85 costs.
Bob Bashforth, for Pearson, unemployed, said his excessive drinking had led to similar problems in the past.
“He realised he was falling out with people after drinking and he cut down greatly on alcohol. This was Christmas and his wife confirms it was the first time for nine months he had consumed a significant amount.
“It was the early hours of the morning. He became bad-tempered and she struck him and he then went beyond reasonable self-defence,” said Mr Bashforth.
He added: “Fortunately, he didn’t cause any particular injury. He was immediately remorseful.”
