DERBYSHIRE: Healthy Places - final line-up

Community groups which have been boosting the quality of life for people across NE Derbyshire are in line for major cash prizes.

The Healthy Places Awards has attracted nominations from a range of worthy causes.

From groups promoting healthy eating and exercise, to those that focused on mental well-being, the diverse range of applicants has proved Derbyshire people are getting involved in making their area a healthier place to live.

The campaign, which is now in its third year is run by NHS Derbyshire County in collaboration with the Derbyshire Times.

This year more cash is up for grabs than ever before with £21,000 on offer prizes will range from £500 to £2,000 and help groups develop their projects for the benefit of the people they serve.

The nine groups are:

St Albans Tuesday Lunch Club.

The luncheon club, based in Holmewood, provides, healthy freshly-cooked lunches, principally but not exclusively for older people.

Diners can enjoy lunch for just £2.50 plus a chance to meet with others.

Although aimed mainly at older people the club, which has been running for around 12 years, is open to families and visitors.

Blackwell Voluntary Youth Club.

The club helps young people from disadvantaged areas access activities and achieve goals.

The project also helps children aged eight to 15, who do not go on holidays to have time away from home.

The club also organises community events.

Brimington Bowling Club.

The community venture managed by volunteers provides exercise for people of all abilities.

The sport encourages physical and mental well-being and for elderly people, families, disabled and young people.

Social and charity events are held throughout the season.

Clowne Wildlife Group.

The group encourages people to get out and about in the countryside, undertake surveys and participate in campaigns.

Meeting in Clowne Methodist Church, members are also encouraged to visit nature reserves and carry out conservation work.

The group also hosts guided walks.

Elmton and Creswell Village Company.

The project takes place in Creswell and works to regenerate the area and surrounding villages.

It offers training in technical skills to schoolchildren, youth, the unemployed and those in work to further their skills.

The company also helps unemployed people search for jobs and take part in mock interviews.

St Barnabas Centre.

Based in Danesmoor, the centre brings the community together through a shared green space.

Members work to create areas of quiet reflection, conservation and areas to grow fresh fruit and vegetables.

The centre hosts family fun events.

Root and Branch Project: Mastin Moor Allotment and Garden Group.

The group offers outdoor activities, horticultural therapy and support for people with mental health difficulties.

Members also learn about healthy eating, grow their own fruit and veg and make new friends.

The project also helps maintain the Community Garden.

Specialist Stroke Services

Based in Staveley the service supports stroke survivors and their carers who live in North Derbyshire.

The group brings people together to reduce isolation and offers support and activities.

Members are encouraged to take up new hobbies and learn new skills.

Coloured Cob Equestrian Centre

Situated in Creswell, the centre hosts horse riding for many youngsters.

Several disabled clients also use the centre and get a chance to enjoy the great outdoors and groom them.

Riders can learn, exercise and the centre also maintains the pastures.
