A SALON owner is determined to raise hundreds of pounds for hospice patients when he takes on this year’s hair-raising Monsal Hill Climb cycle challenge.

Jamie Flaxman, 47, of Carlton’s Hairdressing, on Glumangate, Chesterfield, has already supported Ashgate Hospice, in the town, after cycling the Derbyshire Times and Polaris Flag charity ride for the hospice and is ready for more punishment in the name of a very good cause.

He said: “I really enjoyed the DT’s 50mile ride but I’ve been gearing up to take on the Monsal Hill time trial all year and this will be another great way to support the hospice.”

The A4e 82nd Monsal Hill Climb time trial is scheduled from 11am, on Sunday, October 7, and attracts riders from across the region as well as hundreds of supporters helping to make the event a fantastic spectacle and a great stage for Jamie’s fundraising bid.

He will be trying to complete a very steep, 675 yard climb - which includes a gradient of one-in-six - in the fastest time possible.

The event - organised by Sheffrec cyclist Marc Etches - was first run in 1930 after a few friends rode out to Monsal Head and used to time each other up the hill.

Last year’s fastest time was recorded by Gunnar Gronlund, of the RST RT Trigon team, at 1min 26secs. Those wishing to sponsor Jamie can visit www.justgiving.com/jamieflaxman and anyone interested can also visit www.monsalhillclimb.org.uk for details.
