NDET 11-10-12 MC 31 Tina Arnold devastated at the break in of the new Barnado's charity shop in Clay Cross, where thousands of pounds of stock was stolen before the store was even opened.

Heartless crooks trashed a new charity shop - before it had even opened - and stole thousands of pounds worth of stock.

Thieves smashed through a back door at the Barnardo’s shop, on Newbridge Street Parade, Clay Cross, and took most of the stock including more than 300 items of clothing and jewellery.

During the break-in between 5.30pm on Wednesday, October 10 and 8.45am on Thursday, October 11, burglars damaged the till and emptied bins around the shop.

Despite the break-in the charity, which supports children and young people across Derbyshire, officially opened the new store on Saturday.

Amanda Smith, the charity’s area business manager said: “We’re really upset.

“It really is like stealing from children because money raised goes directly to help children and families that Barnardo’s support. We’ve had some lovely donations from the public of good quality clothes and jewellery and we were really looking forward to getting the store open this week.

“If anyone could help by bringing donations to help us restock the store we’d be very grateful.”

The charity run nearly 70 community services across the Midlands including a project in Chesterfield which support young people to live independently when they leave care.

Tina Arnold, area manager support said: “I came in in the morning and it was such a shock. It’s not just what they’ve taken, they’ve trashed the place.

“We had set up the store so beautifully which had taken quite a bit of time. Most of the items were priced at £10 or above. It will cost us thousands of pounds to replace it.”
