Critics slam council’s new move

BOLSOVER District Council has tried to reassure residents its move from Bolsover town’s Sherwood Lodge offices to the former Clowne college campus will support both towns, be more efficient and save costs.
Residents raised concerns the move - following the Morrisons purchase of Sherwood Lodge for a store and petrol station - has been unnecessary because they claim original offices were adequate, the move could destroy Bolsover, reduce car parking and green land and deprive Clowne of education facilities.
But the council argued Sherwood Lodge was considered too big, expensive and an energy drain and was not flexible to allow rental. It is confident a Morrisons will boost Bolsover and provide more car parking with landscaping.
The council has been criticised for taking a larger site but explained its new office space is smaller and larger areas are being leased. A council spokesman said the old Chesterfield College Clowne campus was to be sold before the council was interested and the council has continued to lease part of the site to the college. The council claims financial figures are currently commercially sensitive until all matters are finalised but they would release them in the future. It stated there is a lot of public support for its move.
