Council tax freeze proposed for North East Derbyshire

North East Derbyshire District Council is proposing to freeze council tax for the second year running.
It is recommending that there will be no increase in its share of the bill – to help hard-pressed families already struggling with the rising cost of living.
Cllr Pat Kerry, lead member for economy, finance and regeneration, said: “Setting our budget in the difficult financial climate, while protecting frontline services, continues to be a challenge.
“But at a time when our residents are under pressure from rising household bills we have a duty to keep Council Tax bills as low as possible, which is why we are recommending no increase in the amount residents pay for our services.”
As well as keeping bills low the council has made big savings and protected its frontline services for vulnerable residents. Working in partnership with others to share resources, joining forces with other councils to negotiate cheaper deals for goods and not recruiting to vacant posts, are all ways the council has saved money.
Council leader Graham Baxter said: “Over the past year we have made savings of more than £700,000, and over the year ahead we will continue to do everything we can to make efficiencies.
“We have protected services for our most vulnerable residents and have also introduced a range of improvements including the burgundy bin recycling scheme. We are determined to build upon this – for example over the year ahead we will be improving our leisure facilities.”
The proposed council tax freeze was will now go to a meeting of the full council on February 27 for final approval.
In addition to North East Derbyshire District Council, the council tax bill is made up of four other precepts – Derbyshire County Council, parish councils, the fire authority and the police authority.
