TWO TEENAGERS took to the water to raise £2,000 as a heartfelt thank-you to the volunteer rescuers who raced to their aid in the aftermath of a climbing accident in the Peak District.

Jimmy Hyland and Jamie Fisher found themselves calling on the services of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) after they fell around ten feet while climbing at the Roaches last August.

In a show of gratitude for the help they received, Jimmy and Jamie were among 200 people who braved the icy waters of the River Derwent on Boxing Day to take part in Matlock’s annual raft race.

The pair were joined by Jimmy’s dad Rob, friends Buster Crabb and Fletcher Smedley and Buxton MRT member Josh Hall.

Jimmy said: “The river was really fast on the day. The raft flipped over at the weir and we were all washed off, but thankfully we managed to complete the race on our own raft.”

And having set themselves a fund-raising target of £1,000 Jimmy said the team was “pleasantly surprised” with the final total.

“I think it was important to do something a bit ‘out there’ to raise as much money as possible,” he added. “We are incredibly grateful for what they have done for us, and for other people too.”
