City 'no' to incinerator

Campaigners against plans to build a waste incinerator in Chesterfield say it is "encouraging" that a similar proposal in Derby was turned down last week.

Plans submitted to Derby City Council to build a waste gasification plant in Spondon have been rejected by the council's planning control committee — despite officers recommending that the development be approved.

Councillors refused the application for Cyclamax's Raynesway Resource Park because they had concerns about the impact of the plant on the health of local residents.

Julie Harrington, spokeswoman for Chesterfield Against Incineration, which is fighting against Cyclamax's plans to build a waste gasification plant on Dunston Road, said: "The main reason for rejection was the public's perception of the risks to health from the unproven technology, which is a material planning consideration and applies equally to the Cyclamax application in Chesterfield.

"The vast majority of the 11,000-plus objections to the Chesterfield application mention health fears, in addition to concerns specific to this site, such as unsuitable roads and the negative impact on the local economy."

Derby City Council has also refused planning permission for a gasification plant in Sinfin.

Simon Bacon, spokesman for Sinfin and Spondon Against Incineration, added: "The sooner incineration companies realise that Derby and Derbyshire don't want incineration the better."
