breaking news
CHESTERFIELD is marking UK’s twelve annual Holocaust Memorial Day today (Friday, January 27).
The the anniversary of the date of the liberation of Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau is being commemorated at the Winding Wheel.
The event organised by Chesterfield Law Centre’s Tackling Hate and Harassment Project will be urging people to speak up against hatred and discrimination.
Derbyshire police officers will also be attending the event.
Chesterfield Borough Council will also be marking the anniversary with a display in the town hall foyer.
There will also be a Book of Commitment available for members of the public to sign from Holocaust Memorial Day until Friday, February 3.
Members of the public can come in and write their personal message of remembrance in memory of all the people who suffered Nazi persecution during the Second World War.
Chesterfield mayor Peter Barr said: “The theme for this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day is ‘Speak Up, Speak Out’ and asks us to think about the rights, responsibility and duty we all have to speak up when we see or hear something which we believe to be wrong.
“It challenges us to learn about what happens when we don’t speak out and what can happen when we do use our voice.”
