HARDWICK: Chairman John Young welcomed 32 members to the May meeting of Hardwick Probus, a reduced number from the usual attendance as a result of holidays and illness.

Special wishes were sent to Stan Ball, Ivor Chilcott, Brian Smith and John Watts, who were among those unable to be present.

Members stood in memory of Roy Jackson, who had died suddenly since the previous meeting. Some members had attended his funeral at Hasland Methodist Church.

News was given of the inter-Probus bowls singles competition on June 18, at Club Chesterfield, and the players who will represent Hardwick were announced. The competition starts at 9am.

The annual golf competition, scheduled for Monday, July 7, at Stanedge Golf Club, was confirmed, as was the annual dinner on April 3, 2009, at The Sandpiper.

There are still places available for the chairman's outing, on June 24. Applications should be made to John Young on (01246) 211182 or David Bottomley on (01246) 451899. Non-members are welcome.

Making his third visit was guest speaker Clive Holliday, who presented the third section of his London trilogy entitled London Revisited. A vote of thanks was given by past-chairman Derek Grindell.

The club meets at Club Chesterfield on the fourth Tuesday each month, from 10am to 12noon, with guest speakers and the opportunity to take part in many club activities.

EMBROIDERERS: At the monthly meeting of the Chesterfield Embroiderers' Guild at Eastwood Hall, Rose Hill, Anne Wood gave an illustrated talk on The Quaker Tapestry and also brought some samples.

Guild members were joined at the meeting by Quakers from The Friends' Meeting House.

The guild's next meeting takes place on Thursday, July 3, at 7pm when Sally Turnbull, a quilter and patchworker, will give a talk titled Passionate about Piecing.

FLOWER: Chesterfield Flower Lovers Club chairman Mrs Trixie Short welcomed members and guests to an open evening meeting.

She introduced the demonstrator, Nick Grounds from Wisbech, the flower arranging auctioneer, who gave a demonstration titled Flotsam and Jetsam.

Nick's down to earth tips and humour were well received. A vote of thanks was given by vice-chairman Mollie Johnson.

President Jean Neaps presented trophies to members who had taken part in the club competition in April.

Class 2: A Favourite Book - 2nd Audrey Marsden, 3rd Anne Queen. Class 3: An Unforgettable Song - 3rd Anne Queen.

The next meeting will be held at the Winding Wheel on July 1 at 2.15pm.

FAMILY HISTORY: Chesterfield and District Family History Society held its June meeting at St Hugh's RC Church, Littlemoor.

Chairman Mike Sims welcomed members and guests and gave details of forthcoming events and items of interest.

Members were then invited to use the society's library, records, microfiche and internet connection to research their family history.

The next family history meeting will be on Tuesday, July 1, at 7.30pm when Anne Brown will give a talk "Snapshots of 1895 Dronfield".

ROTARY: Chesterfield Rotary Club held its monthly business meeting when senior vice-president Bryan White presided and welcomed visitors in the absence of president David Windle, who was guest of the Inner Wheel Club at their Charter anniversary lunch.

Rtn Frank Clifford, president of Bolsover Rotary Club, and Mr Ian Gordon, guest of Rtn Gordon Hornblower, were welcomed yet again and for the first time, Rtn Paul Fryer, president of Matlock Rotary Club, was introduced and greeted.

PP Alec Taylor brought greetings from meetings held with fellow Rotarians while cruising on The Arcadia.

Rtn Rob Wadd officiated at the monthly draw, which supports Rotary Foundation, and the winners were Past Presidents Robert Robinson and John Wilkins and Rtn David Priestnall.

Members were encouraged to support two events - this week's classic car rally at Renishaw Hall and the president's evening at the home of PP John Heath and his wife Joan on Friday, June 27.

Senior vice-president Bryan read out a letter of thanks from Chris Matthews on receiving a donation of 100 towards his attendance at the National Youth Theatre Summer School. He expressed the wish to visit the club on completing the course, to talk about the experience.

Members agreed to support Hannah Rodger, a student at St Mary's RC High School, who is a keen musician and member of the training choir for Cantamus, the famous girls' choir from Mansfield.

She also sings in school choirs, plays the piano, is learning to play the harp and is a former winner of the Rotary club's senior verse-speaking competition.

A bursary of 300 has been awarded to Hannah from the John Madin Fund, which helps young musicians of the town.

The final of this year's senior verse-speaking competition will be held at Parkside School, Boythorpe, on Tuesday, June 17, at 7.30pm when ten students will read their own choice of poem. Friends and families of competitors and members are invited to attend the event.

Senior vice-president Bryan invited PP Tim Stubbins to propose the closing toast.

CONCERT: Midsummer music will be aired by Chesterfield Co-operative Choral Society and special guests Matlock Band.

Their concert at St Thomas's Church, Brampton, Chesterfield, on June 21, will feature a programme of light choral music, under the direction of Andrew Marple.

The Midsummer Music concert starts at 7.30pm.

Admission is 5 for tickets bought in advance or 6 at the door. Tickets are available from Hudson's, Chesterfield Co-op (member services) and members of the choir.

ME: Fourteen Chesterfield-based members of the Sheffield ME Group spent an afternoon on the terrace of Fredericks Caf in Queen's Park on Thursday when they had the opportunity to both socialise and network.

Members proposed that other informal summer events be organised and these will take place at the caf in Queen's Park on Wednesday, July 30, and Wednesday, August 27, from 2pm-3pm.

Members felt that these meetings played an important role in the sharing of information and common experiences as well as combating the isolation which frequently accompanies this chronic and disabling illness.

The group's next meeting will take place at Chesterfield library on Thursday, September 25, from 2pm-4pm when there will be a guest speaker.

SCARSDALE: President Harry Reeve chaired the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Chesterfield Scarsdale at the Red Lion, Stonedge, with 33 members present.

The president welcomed John Windle from the Rotary Club of Whangotpapa, New Zealand. John successfully fined all Rotarians who had visited New Zealand for failing to help the president pronounce his club's name.

President Harry welcomed back PP Peter Blake after his illness and congratulated him on his 80th birthday. The president had visited PP Alan Taylor in Walton Hospital and reported that he was looking much better.

The president had visited Hope Valley Rotary Club and was presented with a banner celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Dambusters.

Rtn John Botham appealed to club members to provide items of bric-a-brac for an auction in aid of the Motor Neurone Research Society. Rtn Ian Vardey informed the club that the Kids Day Out to Magna was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 11.

PP George Ling held the monthly foundation draw. The winners were: 1 PP Peter Blake; 2 JVP Clive Robbins; 3 PP Alan Blackburn.

JVP Clive Robbins introduced the speaker for the evening, new member Malcolm Smith, who was thanked by Rtn Brian Yates.

CHOIR: Chesterfield Male Voice Choir played at Barlow's Last Night of the Proms annual promenade concert on Saturday.

The choir was conducted by the concert musical director Andrew Booth and the accompanist was Joyce Jukes.

The choir's next concert is at St Swithin's Church, Holmesfield, tomorrow at 7.30pm under musical director Rita Butler when they will be performing several new songs plus old favourites. There will also be soloists.

Admission is 8 (concessions 7) and refreshments will be served.

MOTOR: Members of North Derbyshire Motor Club enjoyed a games night at Grassmoor Golf Centre.

In the final of the dominoes event John Staniforth beat Thomas Dunlop. The shove halfpenny competition was won by Richard Staniforth with an excellent score of 56.

Second was Mick Clark with 42 points and third was John Staniforth on 26.

The evening was rounded off with a game of killer darts, which was won by Thomas Dunlop, the youngest member of the club.

Richard and John Staniforth organised a trial, aptly named 'The Broom with a View', with five cars competing.

The trial was longer than usual, covering over 50 miles and finishing at the Grassmoor Golf Centre for lunch. The winner was Alan Chapman with Angela Parkin runner-up and Mick Clark in third place.

The club recently traced one of its older members, Ted Mundy, who emigrated to Australia. He is now in touch by email and will be contributing to the club's magazine with tales from Down Under.

NIGHTINGALE: Nightingale Probus met at Club Chesterfield when president Mrs Pat Hooper welcomed 52 members. She also welcomed a new member, Mrs Sue Simpson.

Mrs Hooper informed members about the death of Dorothy Cliff and called for a short silence in her memory. Mrs Cliff was a long-standing member of Nightingale who was skilled in handicrafts.

Several members gave news about Mrs Joan Loverock who has had a knee replacement.

Mrs Hooper congratulated David and Elaine Jenkins on the occasion of their diamond wedding. Elaine had been a member of Nightingale for many years and David is a member of the Chesterfield Probus.

Mrs Hooper reported on the successful three-day break in Barnstable.

After the treasurer's report, the social secretary, Mrs Elise Bolton, reminded members of the strawberry tea at Eyre Chapel on June 17 and the Whitby trip on August 7.

Mrs Bolton asked for a show of hands from members interested in a tour of the David Nieper factory at Alfreton, followed by lunch at Willersley Castle at Cromford in September.

Scarsdale Probus have extended an invitation to members to join them in a visit to Liverpool on July 17.

The invitation from Chesterfield Probus Club to York on September 17 is still open.

The speaker-finder, Mrs Pauline Wannell, asked members to contribute poems for inclusion in a programme for the December meeting and said the speaker for July 2 would be Andy Firth on The Sign of The Times.

Mrs Hooper will lead a walk on June 16, starting from Tansley.

Mrs Hooper introduced the speaker, John Clifford, whose talk, A New Look at Eyam, told the story of the plague which struck the village.

The vote of thanks was given by Mrs Joy Kench.

QUIZ: A team from Chesterfield won the final of the National Townswomen's Guild quiz in Birmingham.

The Chesterfield Federation team comprised Jenny Sellars, from Clay Cross Townswomen's Guild, together with two members of the Chesterfield Pavements Guild, Jean Loebl and Nora Crouch.
