CHESTERFIELD: Woman’s phone stolen during meal at pub

Police are appealing for information after a woman had her mobile phone stolen while she was enjoying a meal at a pub in Chesterfield.

The 31-year-old was eating lunch with a child she was caring for at Abacus, on St Mary’s Gate, at about 12pm last Thursday when she was approached by a man who she thought was begging or collecting money.

He placed a piece of paper on the table over her phone and the woman asked him to go away.

The man left but moments later the woman realised her phone had been stolen.

He is described as around 5ft 8in tall, with a stocky build and dark thinning hair. He was wearing dark clothing. PCSO John Lockwood, of the Chesterfield Town Centre Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, has been making enquiries. He said: “Officers believe that this man may have been with a few others and were visiting a number of bars in the town centre that day.

“It appears the man took advantage of a situation where a woman was distracted while caring for a child and I would ask anyone who noticed these men acting suspiciously, or who knows anything about the incident, to contact us.”

PCSO Lockwood added: “We would also advise people to, if possible, always make sure that they keep any valuables, including purses and mobile phones, in a handbag or pocket, and to keep them out of view and close by.”

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Derbyshire police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
