The crooked spire, Queen’s Park, our outdoor market and canal are among the attractions Derbyshire Times readers would recommend to visitors.

New figures show tourism is on the up - with more visitors coming to Chesterfield than ever before.

Last year saw a nine per cent rise in visitor numbers with over three million day trippers and 320,000 booking an overnight stay.

The boost in tourists has also increased the amount of money being spent in the town by 11 per cent since 2010.

Tourists spent over £142m in our hotels, attractions, restaurants and shops – way above the two per cent increase for the East Midlands and seven per cent increase for the Peak District and Derbyshire as a whole.

Derbyshire Times Facebook friends have been sharing their favourite parts of the town - and the reasons they think Chesterfield is becoming a tourist hotspot.

Dean Fidler said: “Crooked Spire, a good place to shop, with our large outdoor market.”

Chris Tricklebank added: “It’s a great town for shopping, good restaurants and its on the doorstep of the peak district.”

Owen James said: “Recommended parts of town-The Royal Oak public house in The Shambles, Thursday flea market or a show at The Winding Wheel or Pomegranate Theatre.”

Jan Warsop added: “The restoration of the rest of the canal will bring even more visitors in - by boat!”

The positive news has also extended to the job market where the number of people employed full time in the tourism sector now stands at 2,035, an increase of 11 per cent.

Chesterfield borough councillor Amanda Serjeant, member for leisure culture and tourism, said: “More people are opting to holiday in the UK and we need to make sure Chesterfield promotes its many assets.

“We’re delighted to see these increases across tourism figures as it’s a good indicator that we are promoting and positioning the town in a positive way.”
