CHESTERFIELD: Spireite’s marathon task for hospice
David Garratt raises money for Ashgate Hospice in the London Marathon
A FOOTBALL fan who lost over four stones in weight after taking up running is taking part in the London Marathon.
Spireite David Garratt, of Stonegravels, started serious running after competing in the Chesterfield Community 5K Run last summer.
The council worker, aged 29, is taking on the London marathon on April 21 to raise money for Ashgate Hospice.
“I started running at the start of 2012 in an effort to lose weight and get fit,” said David.
“I started running from my house to the Chesterfield FC stadium and then doing a lap of the stadium and running back.”
David’s distances soon increased and he is now running up to 20 miles on his long runs.
He said: “I’ve lost four-and-a-half stone since I’ve started after being 16-and-a-half stone.”
“It’s amazing to have got a place, especially as it’s a week before my 30th birthday.
“I thought it was a good way to see out my twenties!”
David, who works in the revenues section at Chesterfield Borough Council, is running for the hospice after a work colleague died of a terminal illness.
He said: “The hospice has also previously been our charity of the year at work and I think it’s a great orgnanisation to support.”
