CHESTERFIELD: Politicians speak of devastation at Tesco job cuts

Politicians have spoken of their devastation after Tesco announced plans to close its Barlborough depot with the loss of hundreds of jobs.

Shocked staff at the Gander Lane grocery distribution centre – which employs about 400 people – were told the news yesterday.

NE Derbyshire MP Natascha Engel said: “I’m absolutely horrified by the news – this is going to be a huge blow to the local economy.

“I don’t understand why they’re moving jobs from north to south – the depot is ideally located right next to the M1.

“I really feel for all the workers – it’s just devastating.”

Barlborough Cllr Anne Western added: “It’s shocking.

“I feel so sorry for all the people who turned up to to work yesterday and found out this.”

The supermarket chain is cutting a total of 2,000 distribution centre jobs nationwide – at Chesterfield, Harlow, Weybridge and Magor.

However, the company said it would attempt to relocate workers to two new distribution sites which are being created in Reading and Dagenham.

Bolsover MP Dennis Skinner said: “Getting rid of jobs in the north and building new centres down south – so much for every little helps.

“It’s a scandal.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “We have informed colleagues of plans to close the Chesterfield grocery distribution centre.

“We are working with affected colleagues and their representatives to support them at this difficult time and we’ll do everything we can to find alternative roles within Tesco for as many people as possible.”

The announcement starts a 90-day consultation, with the sites due to close by September.
