CHESTERFIELD: HMV site to become food store
CHESTERFIELD’S HMV store has been acquired by a supermarket chain.
Morrisons said it would be turning the music retailer, on Vicar Lane, into a branch of its Morrisons M convenience shops by the summer.
HMV collapsed into administration in January.
A spokesman for Morrison said: “It’s still very early days. The only information we have got is we are committed to opening all the acquired stores by the end of the summer.”
When asked if staff at the HMV store would get jobs at the new supermarket, he added: “They would be more than welcome to apply.
“Typically those kind of stores employ around 20 people.”
HMV - which employs 12 staff on Vicar Lane - is one of several high street victims to the recession recently.
The 92-year-old company announced that it was entering administration after failing to agree a new deal with its banks.
DVD rental Blockbusters and camera firm Jessops, which also have shops in Chesterfield, have gone into administration as well.
Morrisons bought 49 of the closed Blockbusters sites across the country but they do not include either of the Chesterfield outlets.
