CHESTERFIELD: Gang jailed for 27 years after robbing vulnerable man

A gang who robbed a vulnerable man in his Chesterfield home were told they had thrown away their freedom - all for the sake of £50.

A gang who robbed a vulnerable man in his Chesterfield home were told they had thrown away their freedom - all for the sake of £50.

Judge Michael Fowler said the four person gang, consisting of David Mann, Martyn Smith, Lisa Devlin and John Haynes, all from Chesterfield, had chosen their victim because he had suffered a head injury and had received compensation.

Sending them to jail for a combined total of 27 years and four months, the judge told them: “The victim suffered bruising and a bleeding nose and you got a laptop, computer game and a wallet with £50. That is what he suffered for.”

Laura Pitman, prosecuting, said Devlin, 30, had been a friend of the victim and he let her into his home when she arrived with friends on August 8.

After chatting in the living room, she took his mobile phone so he could not get help.

Devlin went upstairs with Haynes, 25, and found a wallet containing the cash. The victim was then attacked downstairs after the men tore out a phone line linked to carers. They kept demanding more money, warning him he would “get a lot more” if he went to police.

When they left the man went to the home of a neighbour for help.

All four pleaded guilty to robbery, with Mann also admitted perverting the course of justice, at Derby Crown Court.

Mann, 32, was jailed for seven years and ten months, Smyth, 32, was jailed for seven years and two months, while Haynes and Devlin were each given six years and two months.
