CHESTERFIELD: Amanda Carty returns home from pioneering treatment in America

A Chesterfield mum who was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer has returned home after her first spell of treatment in America.

Amanda Carty, 46, spent four weeks at the Burzynski Clinic in Houston, Texas, in December where she received a pioneering drug in a bid to prolong her life.

Her husband, Roger, was also shown how to administor the Antineoplaston (ANP) drug at home.

And despite a few set backs since their return from Houston, things are starting to look up.

Roger said: “She has had her first scan and the doctors in America are pleased.

“The tumour is stationary and over the next few months we are hoping it decreases in size.”

The mum-of-two was diagnosed with a grade four Glioblastoma in November 2011 and told she had three months to live.

“She was told at that time that there was no known cure for this type of cancer,” he said.

“This news was devastating for the whole family.”

Refusing to give up, Roger read up on the America-based treatment and set up the Amanda Carty Cancer Trust to raise awareness about brain cancer and to raise funds for Amanda’s treatment, which costs £200,000 over a two-year period.

The charity’s next event is at Morrisons on Chatsworth Road on Monday, March 11.

Roger added: “Amanda’s treatment is costing £5,000 per month so we need as much money as possible to continue this.

“We’ve had fantastic support from the community and everyone is welcome to come along.”

A charity auction will take place at the Chesterfield Hotel on Friday, April 5.

Items include a signed Ellen MacArthur book, two signed Manchester United footballs, two signed Arsenal shirts, tickets to see Chesterfield Football Club this season, two Derbyshire County Cricket Club day match tickets, tickets to see Colin Fry and much more.

For further information please contact the Amanda Carty Cancer Trust shop and cafe on 01246 769762 or visit them in person at unit 16 on Storforth Lane Trading Estate, Hasland, Chesterfield, S41 0QQ.
