Chatsworth's hidden secrets

A new book aims to lift the lid on the hidden secrets of the Chatsworth Estate. Archaeologists John Barnatt and Nicola Bannister surveyed the 12,000-acre estate prior to writing The Archaeology of a Great Estate: Chatsworth and Beyond.

Their study revealed unrecognised prehistoric burial mounds and farming remains and new details about landscaping, farming, industry and roads at Chatsworth.

Dr Barnatt said: “We now understand how Capability Brown used the then contemporary landscape of hedgerowed field boundaries with their standard trees.”
